Officer Christine Rath Award

Officer Christine Rath lived a life grounded in dedication, compassion, and a profound love for animals—especially horses. Before joining the La Mesa Police Department, she began riding at just nine years old and grew into an accomplished equestrian, excelling in the disciplined art of dressage and earning multiple competition ribbons, including recognition as Rider of the Month by Southern California Riding Magazine. After starting as a La Mesa Police Department reserve officer in 1978, she served with the San Diego Police Department for a year before coming back to the La Mesa Police Department as a full-time police officer for the next twenty three years! Officer Rath built a reputation for professionalism, bravery, and unwavering integrity. Over the course of her career, she earned numerous commendations, including a Medal of Heroism for rescuing two motorists from a burning vehicle.

At 55 years old, Officer Rath passed away after a battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy defined by courage, kindness, and extraordinary dedication to both her community and the animals she loved. Because horses played such a meaningful role in her life, this scholarship honors her memory by supporting 4-H students who share her passion for animals, hard work, and personal growth—ensuring her spirit continues to guide and inspire the next generation of riders and leaders.

The LMPOA Foundation, with the assistance of staff at El Capitan High School, proudly presents the annual Christine Rath Award to an agricultural student who exemplifies strong academic achievement, excellence in their FFA/4-H project, leadership ability, and citizenship in keeping with the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics.

The award includes a $500 scholarship, and the recipient’s name is engraved on a plaque proudly displayed at El Capitan High School.
