Officer Lauren Craven Memorial Service Award

Officer Lauren Craven (LMPD #1342) began her career with the La Mesa Police Department on February 26, 2024. On October 20, 2025, at 10:24 PM, she was returning to the city on eastbound Interstate 8 when a major injury collision occurred in front of her. Officer Craven immediately requested an ambulance over the radio and exited her patrol vehicle to render aid. Moments later, she was tragically struck by an oncoming motorist and died at the scene.

Those who had the privilege of knowing Officer Craven were deeply impacted by her positivity, kindness, and genuine care for others. She loved helping people—whether offering advice to a friend or answering a question from a stranger—and she demonstrated unwavering dedication to both the community and the law enforcement profession.

During her hiring process with the La Mesa Police Department, Officer Craven shared a quote that reflected the heart behind her service:

“It has always been my passion to serve others and there has never been a doubt in my mind that being in law enforcement is what I am meant to do.”

In honor of Officer Craven’s ultimate sacrifice, the LMPOA Foundation has established the Officer Lauren Craven Memorial Service Award. This award recognizes a La Mesa high school senior who exemplifies exceptional commitment to public service and servant leadership. Each nominee must be recommended by a school employee or a representative of a service organization, along with a statement explaining why the student merits the award. Nominations are due annually by April 30th and can be emailed to the President of the LMPOA Foundation.

The award includes a $1,000 monetary scholarship, and the recipient’s name is engraved on a plaque proudly displayed at the La Mesa Police Department.
